AoLE Age-Appropriate Learning Outcomes

Phase 1 (Nursery and Reception)
  • Listening and Speaking: Children will begin to listen attentively, follow simple instructions, and express their needs and feelings using basic vocabulary. They will start to participate in conversations, showing an understanding of social conventions like taking turns.
  • Reading: Introduction to basic phonics, recognising familiar words, and beginning to understand simple texts. They will enjoy listening to stories and can discuss characters and events.
  • Writing: Development of fine motor skills to hold writing tools, forming letters, and writing their name. They will begin to experiment with mark-making and attempt to write simple words and phrases.
Phase 2 (Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3)
  • Listening and Speaking: Enhanced listening skills, following more complex instructions, and engaging in structured conversations. Children will be able to ask and answer questions, and begin to use language to explain, describe, and predict.
  • Reading: Greater proficiency in phonics and word recognition. Children will read simple books independently, demonstrate comprehension by discussing plots, settings, and characters, and make simple inferences from texts.
  • Writing: Writing sentences with correct punctuation, beginning to use a wider range of vocabulary, and writing short stories or descriptions. They will also start to plan and revise their writing with guidance.
Phase 3 (Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6)
  • Listening and Speaking: Confidence in speaking in front of others, participating in group discussions, and presenting information clearly. Children will use a range of vocabulary and complex sentence structures, understanding how to adapt their speech for different audiences.
  • Reading: Ability to read a variety of texts fluently and with understanding. Children will analyse texts, identify themes and main ideas, infer meanings, and compare different texts. They will also begin to evaluate the effectiveness of texts and their own reading preferences.
  • Writing: Producing coherent and structured pieces of writing for different purposes and audiences. This includes narratives, reports, and persuasive texts. Children will use a variety of sentence types, rich vocabulary, and proper grammar. They will also revise and edit their work independently to improve clarity and impact.
