Year 3

Here you can learn more about Year 3.

Dears Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 3! Croeso i Flwyddyn 3!

I hope you have all had a safe an enjoyable summer break and are ready to start the new school year. This year is extra special as it will be your first year in Key Stage 2!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Chloe- Leigh Thomas, I began teaching in Oystermouth last April and taught the Year 4 class for the summer term. I have previously taught in all year groups across Key Stage 2 and the Foundation Phase.

I super excited to be teaching Year 3 and seeing the pupils grow in both confidence and independence. I will be supported by Mrs Acari and Mrs Hill who are also looking forward to the new school year.

I hope you are all very excited for the fun and engaging activities that I have planned for this terms topic of “What’s in our square mile?”. In this topic we will be investigating what is special and unique in the locality of Mumbles.

I will be sending out a short letter weekly via class dojo, with information about the work we are covering in class that week and to inform you of any special events or trips that are taking place.

Reading:
Weekly reading books will be sent home for you and your child to read together. Please encourage them to fill in their sections of the journal and please let me know if you feel that the level needs adjusting, if you would like any advice or if you have any suggestions for supporting reading at home. Your child’s progress will also be reviewed in class every week during our “Reading Rock Stars” Carousel.

Spelling:
There will be one piece of spelling homework a week and this will be sent out on a Monday. We will be having an informal spelling test on a Friday. Please can you encourage your children to learn their spelling words as it will help them when completing their independent writing and help to improve the quality of their work.

Maths:
Each week there will be one piece of Maths homework given out through printed activity sheets or online via My Maths. This homework will be given out evey Friday to be completed by the following week for our “Mega Maths” session.

Homework Menu:
At the start of each new topic, a Homework Menu will be sent out with a list of activities for the children to complete. We encourage the children to complete at least one activity a fortnight. Your child will need to complete two hot, two warm and two cool tasks from the menu. Some of the activities will be children’s ideas from our EPIC planning.

Mascot:
As long as the regulations don’t change I will be starting our Welsh Mascot during the first few weeks. The aim is for you to show the mascot a little of Mumbles and then to support your child in some simple writing about what they have done and play some of the simple Welsh activities included in the pack. Each child will bring the bag home on a Friday and should return it the following Wednesday.

General Information:

PPA: Miss Bawden will be taking my PPA sessions for the Autumn term on Tuesday afternoons where she will be teaching PE and RE. The children can come to school in a PE kit ready for this session.

Uniform: Please ensure that school uniform is worn and that all clothing has a name on it. The children will be storing their bags and coats in the Year 3 area in the corridor.

Water & Healthy Snack: Pupils may bring in a named water bottle each day, which will be kept in class for children to access whenever they wish. Fruit may be brought in for a morning snack and will be put into a tray ready for break.
Stationery: Pupils may bring in a pencil case to keep in their trays. All the equipment the children will need is available in school but I know that many children like to bring their own things in. I will supply handwriting pens and normal pencils.

Topics: Each half term, we will be starting a new topic. The children will all be involved in planning the learning through our EPIC (Everybody Planning in Class) Planning sessions.

Visits: School visits are now permitted which is brilliant news for us all. We will be going out and about in the community as much as possible but there will also be additional visits linked to our class topics. In order to run our trips as safely as possible, we would be very grateful to have some parent/carer volunteers. I will list the provisional date if our first trip below, if you are available to help please let me know. I will update you with further information on our other trips this term as soon as possible

Monday 13th September (1.30pm- 2.45pm)- Walk around the village

If you would like to know any more information, or have any questions or queries then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, either by sending me a message on class dojo or by e-mail: ThomasC1825@hwbcymru.net
