Welsh National Testing

Pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 undergo yearly national testing in the summer term. These tests assess pupils’ ability to read and understand; to perform mathematical procedures and to reason mathematically. There are 3 tests in total. Teachers facilitate the tests within the classroom and in a comfortable and relaxed environment for the pupils. The tests are carried out online and are personalised, meaning they adapt depending on how a pupil is responding to the questions. The benefits of this method of testing are as follows:

• The personalised nature of the assessments mean learners are undertaking a tailored assessment experience and will help all learners develop their skills through understanding what they can do, the things they need to work on, and their next steps.
• The assessments provide schools with information on the skills of individual learners and whole classes and allow us to plan our curriculum most effectively to enable learner progress.
• There is no ‘test window’ for personalised assessments; meaning they can be scheduled to best suit the school and class schedules and routines.
• Learners can take the personalised assessments in small or large groups, depending on the individual and class needs.

Test scores are sent into the Welsh government database and standardised so that they can be compared to other children of similar ages across Wales.

To access your child’s test results, you will need to:

• Login to your child’s Hwb account.
• Halfway down the webpage, click on the “Personalised Assessments” icon.
• Click on “Learner Feedback” and you will see your child’s results.
