Mrs Morgan’s Spring Term 2026 Newsletter

Spring Term 2026 Newsletter

What a busy and wonderful term it has been at Oystermouth Primary School!

We were delighted to welcome new children to our Morning Nursery class this term. They have settled in beautifully and it has been lovely to see them already enjoying school life and becoming part of our school community.

In March, the school celebrated Welsh Week, honouring and celebrating all things Welsh. The highlight of the week was our wonderful Eisteddfod on 27th February, where the children proudly shared their talents and work. It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and pride in Welsh culture across the school.

A huge thank you to everyone who embraced the spirit of World Book Day on 5th March. It was fantastic to see so many amazing book characters around the school!

The children also showed their kindness and generosity during Red Nose Day 2026, enjoying Red Nose biscuits and donating money to dress in red and fancy dress costumes. Together we raised a fantastic total of £761.75 for this important charity. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The busy term ended on a very special note with a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny, who left all of our wonderful children a Malteser Easter Bunny. It was a lovely way to celebrate the end of the term together.

Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our pupils, staff, parents and governors for the continued support you give to the school. It is a privilege to work alongside such dedicated staff and supportive families, and I am incredibly proud of our wonderful children and everything they achieve each day. I feel very fortunate to be the Headteacher of Oystermouth Primary School and to be part of such a caring and positive school community.

I hope you all have a happy and relaxing Easter break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back for another exciting term on Tuesday 14th April!

Spring Term in Dosbarth Limeslade

Where shall we go in our time machine?

We went back in time to the Jurassic period and looked at dinosaurs. We started our topic off with a dinosaur hunt! We were all very excited and we followed the clues to find the baby dinosaurs!

We measured how long a Tyrannosaurus Rex was using our toy bricks and then counted how many we used!

This is how long a Tyrannosaurus rex was.

What if Dragon’s were real? – We programmed Beebot so he could help the dragon get to the castle. We made dragons out of playdoh. We added the wings, feet, tail and eyes!

St. David’s Day – We all drew the Welsh flag on the whiteboard and sang ‘Lliwiau’r Enfys’ in our Eisteddfod.

World Book Day – We walked to Oystermouth library to read lots of stories.

Spring Term in Dosbarth Rotherslade

We have had another busy term in Dosbarth Rotherslade! We had lots of fun introducing our dinosaur topic dressing up as explorers, fossil hunting and measuring out life sized dinosaurs in the playground.

In PE this term the children have been focusing on their ball skills. They have worked individually, with a partner and together in small team games. They have developed skills which include controlling a ball, rolling and throwing a ball at a target, throwing underarm and catching a ball.

In Maths the children have used everyday language to describe and compare objects such as shorter/taller and shorter/longer during practical activities and play. They have developed an awareness of time within our daily routines. They have also explored 3D shapes and developed their awareness that shapes have different properties by handling and building with them.

After half term we celebrated Welsh week and performed our very own fashion show in the school Eisteddfod. The children were fantastic and showed off their wonderful Welsh skills! We learnt all about the story of the Red Dragon which led in perfectly to our second topic ‘What if dragons were real?’

In Literacy we have focused on the story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and the children performed the story in groups using actions and instruments. We then created our own class story ‘We’re going on a dragon hunt’.

In between all of this we enjoyed celebrating World Book Day, Neurodiversity Week and Red Nose Day.

Wishing you all a lovely Easter break- Pasg Hapus!

Spring Term in Dosbarth Langland

We started the term by planning lots of different daffodil bulbs.

We made mazes and controlled Spyro.

We wrote instructions on how to play ‘Retro’ games like Simon.

We celebrated St Davis’s Day.

Lots of time learning outside.

Spring Term in Dosbarth Caswell

This term, our learning has been centred around our exciting topic “What if Dragons were Real?. The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm, using their imaginations to explore mythical creatures through a range of creative and engaging activities.

In Literacy, they have developed their storytelling skills by describing dragons and settings, using ambitious vocabulary, similes, and even speech in their writing.  In Maths, they have applied their skills through practical investigations such as solving problems.  In Science and Technology, the children became young investigators, exploring whether dragons could fly and which wings would work best.

We also celebrated Welsh Week with a range of cultural activities and a wonderful Eisteddfod.

It has been a brilliant term full of creativity, curiosity and confidence in learning.

During the first half term, the children loved travelling through time as part of our ‘Where shall we go in our time machine?’ topic! From stepping into a strict Victorian classroom to exploring old-fashioned toys, seaside holidays in the past, homes through time and learning about important people, the children have developed a fantastic understanding of how life has changed. They have compared the past and present, handled artefacts, taken part in role play, and worked collaboratively to investigate and create. Along the way, they have built their skills across all areas of learning, including speaking and writing about their ideas, designing and making toys, exploring how things work, and learning how to play fairly and work as a team.

It has been wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they asked thoughtful questions and shared their own family experiences. We are very proud of the children for becoming such enthusiastic and knowledgeable Time Travellers!

Spring Term in Dosbarth Pobbles

We’ve had another busy term in Dosbarth Pobbles! Our theme in the first half term was “Where shall we go in our Time Machine?”. We visited Swansea Museum to explore how the Celts and Romans lived in Wales.

We had a fantastic time at Caerleon, where we saw the remains of the Roman amphitheatre, the baths and the barracks.

We also enjoyed visiting the Museum and pretending to be slaves or guests at a Roman feast. Stuffed dormouse anyone?

The children wrote excellent information reports on their return.

Developing our hockey skills and our rugby skills with Ospreys in the Community.

Learning Sea Shanties!

EISTEDDFOD and World Book Day

The children sang brilliantly in our Eistedddfod. They loved “Aderyn Melyn” and the verse including “si-si-siocled”!

We had great fun on World Book Day and the children looked amazing!

HAPPY EASTER FROM DOSBARTH POBBLES! PASG HAPUS!

Spring Term in Dosbarth Three Cliffs

We went to Ancient Roman Britain in our time machine this term. The children really got into this topic, enjoying an online workshop and brilliant trips to Swansea Museum and Caerleon, Roman food tasting, thinking about life as a Roman soldier, writing letters in Latin and a lot of messy junk modelling!

We have spent time investigating how sound is made in science sessions, and made parachutes to find out factors that affect falling objects.

We celebrated World Book Day with fantastic costumes and sharing books with our buddy class.

Music has been a big feature, with an Eisteddfod performance of ‘Migldi Magldi’, using tuned and untuned percussion and discovering major and minor pieces, and a great Sea Shanty singing session.

We have enjoyed PE sessions with the Ospreys, developing rugby skills, and a Roman themed Pilates session.

Spring Term in Dosbarth Oxwich

The first half term of spring began with an immersion day in which the children sparked their interest in our World War 2 topic. The children loved this topic and created some amazing art work, research and many more. As a class we were lucky enough to visit Swansea Museum to immerse ourselves in everything to do with WW2, especially focusing and learning about the Swansea Blitz. The pupils finished the half-term by writing fantastic pieces of information all about WW2.

Our second half term was filled with lots of fun activities. It began with a brilliant world book day in which the children dressed up and brought in their favourite book.  Following our world book day we had science week, the children had the opportunity to perform a few experiments, including coke and mentos! We were lucky enough to have the brilliant Technocamp in, exploring electricity and microbits. Finally, a sporty end to the term which including completing the Mini London Marathon (2 miles) and the inter school cup.

Spring Term in Dosbarth Rhossili

As part of our topic ‘Where will we go in our time machine?’, we visited Swansea Museum to take part in the Swansea at War workshop. The children had a fantastic time exploring artefacts, asking questions, and discovering what life was like in our locality during the Second World War.

It was a brilliant hands on experience that helped bring our learning to life, and the children came away full of enthusiasm and new knowledge about Swansea’s history.

During Welsh Week, the children created beautiful paintings of Swansea during The Blitz, inspired by Welsh artist Will Evans, whose work we discovered on our visit to Swansea Museum. The pupils loved experimenting with watercolours to produce vibrant and expressive artwork in his style.

Throughout the half term, the children have also been developing their understanding of colour. They have explored colour mixing, created tints and shades, and learned about primary and secondary colours. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they experimented with new techniques and applied them creatively in their work.

As part of our science unit on Light, we were delighted to welcome XL Wales into school for a hands on workshop. The children took part in practical investigations to help them understand how light travels and how mirrors and refraction work.

They explored prisms, colours, and the bending of light through different materials, and it was wonderful to see their excitement as they discovered these concepts through real experiments.

This term, we celebrated World Book Day, and the children arrived in school dressed as their favourite book characters. They shared their favourite books with the class and even had the chance to read picture books to younger pupils, which they absolutely loved.

It was wonderful to see all the amazing costumes and to spend a day celebrating stories, imagination, and the joy of reading together!

Extracurricular Clubs – Summer Term

We’re pleased to continue offering a wide and growing range of extracurricular activities at Oystermouth Primary School. Over time, our provision has developed to include a great mix of opportunities for pupils to enjoy beyond the classroom.

From sports and music to maths and chess, these clubs give children the chance to try new things, build confidence, and spend time with friends. Most of our clubs are run by our own staff and are free of charge, which is fantastic for supporting all pupils to get involved.

Many of the current clubs are aimed at our older pupils, reflecting the level of independence and commitment some activities require. We continue to look for opportunities to expand provision across all year groups.

All school-run clubs will resume after Easter, starting week commencing 13th April 2026, with the exception of Cricket, Rugby and Ukulele, which will begin the following week.

You can view the full list of activities and booking information here:

If you have already completed the consent form, there is no need to do this again. However, Cricket has now been added, so if your child would like to take part, please complete the consent form using the link below:

We hope as many children as possible take advantage of the opportunities available and enjoy getting involved.

Choir

I have been really pleased with how the choir has grown this term. We are now over 30 and this is happening every week. It is lovely to have so many Year 2 children.

We have got lots of exciting things to look forward to. Our Choir concert on Tuesday 14th April when we will be having some special guests to help us, and Primary Partners in the Grand in the summer term.

Mr Hunter

Football

Players from Dosbarths Oxwich and Rhossili have been training enthusiastically every Tuesday throughout the season. Due to the fantastic turnout, sessions alternated weekly to ensure everyone had plenty of opportunity to take part. It has been wonderful to see such commitment, teamwork and improvement from all involved. 👏

This term also included several tournaments. Dosbarth Rhossili boys played at Underhill Park on 29th January, followed by the Dosbarth Rhossili girls at the same venue on 12th February. On 26th February, boys from Dosbarths Oxwich and Rhossili competed at Pure Football, and the Dosbarth Rhossili girls returned to Pure Football on 4th March.

Across all events, the pupils represented the school brilliantly, playing with great spirit and determination, and achieving plenty of wins along the way. 🏆

A huge thank you goes to the parents who supported with transport and helped with coaching at the tournaments. Your support makes these opportunities possible and is greatly appreciated.

Mrs Harris

Gower Beaches Chess Club

Our Gower Beaches Chess Club continues to go from strength to strength and has proven so popular that we now alternate sessions for different year groups. It has been fantastic to see the children’s skills, confidence and strategic thinking develop week by week – they are becoming very accomplished players (all the children are better than me!).

We are delighted to have been invited to take some of our Chess Club members to a chess jamboree at Morriston Rugby Club next term – more information will follow soon.

If your child would like to continue practising at home, here are some excellent resources:

Mrs Morgan

Maths Club

Maths Club, which has now been running for a year, continues to be very popular with pupils from Dosbarths Oxwich and Rhossili. Held on Wednesday lunchtimes, the sessions have been packed with problem-solving puzzles and friendly competition, with children working against each other to win an extra biscuit reward!

Pupils have also explored hands-on maths by making their own dodecahedrons, which sparked great discussion about 3D shapes and geometry. Alongside this, they created some fantastic Pi Skyline artwork (pictured).

The results have been impressive and showcase both creativity and mathematical thinking. The group have really embraced the opportunity to explore maths in a fun, relaxed environment, and we look forward to many more engaging activities in the weeks ahead.

Mrs Founds

Netball - Oxwich & Rhossili

Netball continues to go from strength to strength for pupils from Dosbarths Oxwich & Rhossili. Weekly training sessions on Wednesdays have been very well attended, with pupils showing great enthusiasm, teamwork and determination. It has been fantastic to see their skills developing week by week, alongside their positive attitude and support for one another.

A team of Dosbarth Rhossili girls also represented the school at the Urdd Girls Netball competition on 26th March at Swansea Bay Sports Park. With 18 teams taking part, the standard of play was high and the girls rose to the challenge brilliantly. They won all their group games, the quarter finals, semi finals and came away from the final second place medal winners. Amazing team effort!

Well done to everyone involved for their effort and commitment and thank you to those parents that helped out with transport to and from the tournament.

Mrs Morris

Netball - Pobbles & Three Cliffs

Our Monday lunch time Netball Club for Pobbles and Three Cliffs still remains a popular lunch time club.

Next term will see the pupils playing on the outdoor netball courts. Here, they will have the opportunity to learn netball positions and areas of play in readiness to play a ‘fun netball match’ against Rhossili during the last week of the Summer term. This is always enjoyed by all players.

Any new players would be welcome to join.

Mrs Myers

Oystermouth Drama Knights

Oystermouth Drama Knights have been working incredibly hard rehearsing “Captain Starling and the Cosmic Crew” – a fun, child-friendly sci-fi adventure that promises to be out of this world! We are delighted to be performing for the Mumbles Beaches and Gower Beaches children on the afternoons of Thursday 14th May and Friday 15th May. Families of our Drama Knights will also have the opportunity to enjoy the performance on Thursday 14th May at 3:30pm.

Drama Knights is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to develop confidence, creativity and teamwork – and, most importantly, to have lots of fun along the way!

A huge thank you to Tobias and Marc Kent for writing the script and song, and for their continued enthusiasm and dedication in leading Drama Knights each Friday.

Mrs Morgan

Recorder Club

The Recorder Club, made up of pupils from Dosbarth Three Cliffs and Dosbarth Oxwich, has been meeting regularly on Wednesdays after school, with pupils showing great enthusiasm and commitment. They recently did a fantastic job performing their own composition, ‘Welsh Cakes’, at the school Eisteddfod, which was very well received.

The group has worked hard on developing their skills and confidence, and it has been wonderful to see their progress. They are also thoroughly enjoying being part of the Oystermouth Orchestra, where they have the opportunity to play alongside other young musicians and experience making music together.

Miss Draper

Rugby

Rugby training has taken place every Thursday after school this season for pupils from Dosbarths Oxwich and Rhossili. We have seen excellent numbers attending each week, with a great mix of experienced players and those who are new to the sport. It has been fantastic to watch everyone develop their skills, build confidence and support one another. 👏

The pupils have been working hard on key rugby skills, teamwork and match play, and it has been pleasing to see how well they are playing together as the weeks go on. Their enthusiasm and positive attitude have made training sessions enjoyable and productive for all involved.

The team is now working towards the summer rugby competitions, and we look forward to sharing more details soon – watch this space!

Spring Inter-House Sports – Gower Beaches

On Monday 23rd March, pupils from the Gower Beaches classes enjoyed a fantastic Spring Inter-House Sports event held at school. The weather was kind, setting the scene for a brilliant day of football and hockey, with pupils proudly competing for their houses — Red, Green and Yellow.

The event was superbly supported by our Young Ambassadors, Cleo, Flo, Theo and Rhys, who helped everything run smoothly. It was wonderful to see so many pupils taking part with enthusiasm, teamwork and great sporting spirit throughout the day.

Final scores:

  • Green – 150 points
  • Yellow – 120 points
  • Red – 105 points

Congratulations to Green House for winning the day, and well done to all pupils for their fantastic participation and effort.

Tennis

Once again the tennis sessions at lunch times this term have proved to be popular.

A number of pupils from Gower Beaches will be playing in a tennis festival after Easter at Bishop Gore. The festival is also a qualifying event for the Swansea Schools Tennis Competition in June.

As always, these clubs are open to anyone who wants to join.

Mrs Myers

Thank You to Club Staff

Thank you to all the staff who run our extra-curricular clubs. Your time and effort, often given outside your regular hours, are greatly appreciated. These clubs provide valuable opportunities for pupils to explore new interests and develop skills. Your contribution makes a real difference to our school community.

Mrs Morgan

A Special Thank You to Mrs Harris ⚽👏

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs Harris as she steps down from her role as school football coach after an incredible 16 years. During this time, she has generously given countless hours of her own time after school, supporting pupils and helping them develop their skills, confidence and love of the game.

Mrs Harris has taken numerous teams to tournaments over the years and has been a passionate champion for both boys’ and girls’ football. Her dedication, enthusiasm and commitment have created opportunities for so many pupils to represent the school and enjoy sport.

We are extremely grateful for everything she has done for our school community. Her impact will be felt for many years to come. Thank you, Mrs Harris! ⚽💙

We are also pleased to share that Mr Greenwood will be taking on the role of school football coach from the Autumn Term, and we look forward to the next chapter for school football.

🌍 Size of Wales Project – Dosbarth Rhossili 🌍

Dosbarth Rhossili have continued their exciting involvement with the Size of Wales Project, building on the work they began last academic year when they were in Dosbarth Oxwich. Through this project, pupils have been learning about climate change and how they can make a positive difference to the world around them. 🌱

More recently, a group of 13 children from the class worked together to write an original song about combatting climate change. Their creativity and passion really shone through in the lyrics and ideas they developed. On 19th March, the whole class took part in a special recording day when a record producer and videographer visited the school, alongside Victoria from Size of Wales, to record the song professionally. 🎵

The pupils also created props and thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the filming and recording process. It was a fantastic collaborative experience and a memorable day for everyone involved.

A special thank you to Miss David for her support throughout the project.

We are very much looking forward to sharing the final recording – watch this space!

RED NOSE DAY 2026

On Friday 20th March Oystermouth Primary School joined thousands of schools up and down the country coming together to spread joy, have fun and raise money for those who need it most.

Pupils and staff joined in the fun by buying Comic Relief Red Noses, collecting Mr Doodle pin badges, enjoying Red Nose biscuits, and coming to school in fancy dress or wearing something bright and red. Every small act of kindness and participation helped make the day a truly memorable success.

A huge thank you to our pupils, families and staff for your kindness, enthusiasm and support.

The school raised a fantastic total of £761.75 for Red Nose Day 2025!

Norton Lodge Day Centre

Children in Dosbarth Three Cliffs have once again enjoyed visiting Norton Lodge Day Centre this term.

These visits are always very special, and I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff and individuals who spend time there for welcoming the children so warmly.

Spending time together brings so many benefits for everyone involved, and these intergenerational moments are meaningful for both the children and the visitors.

I am very proud of the kindness, patience and empathy our children showed when interacting with the dementia patients.

The pupils represent the school beautifully and truly brightened the day for those they spent time with.

Your perspectives help future families understand what makes our school so special, and they mean a great deal to us. If you’d like to contribute, please feel free to email a few sentences (or more!) to the school office at your convenience.

Big Walk and Wheel

Hello everyone,

Our PTA fundraising continues at a great pace, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported our events and initiatives so far this year. Your involvement really does make a difference to the experiences and opportunities we can provide for the children.

Despite some challenging weather and strong competition from the Autumn Internationals, our Christmas Fayre raised an impressive £1,965. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. We have listened carefully to your feedback, and the Christmas Fayre 2026 will take place on a school night and will avoid clashing with the Newton Road Christmas Lights Extravaganza.

Our Spring Disco introduced a new all-inclusive format, which proved very popular. The ticket price covered entry, a glow stick, party bag and a drink, with no additional sales on the night. The event raised £800 and created a fantastic atmosphere for the children. A very special thank you goes to our new “Disco Queen”, Amanda Barnes, for all her hard work in organising such a successful evening! Our Summer Disco on Thursday 21st May will follow the same format.

The PTA Lottery continues to grow in membership and has already raised £285, with a £50 monthly prize. The lottery is open to all family members, with each number costing £5 per month via Standing Order on the 1st of the month. If you would like to join, please use the details below:

Our Children’s Christmas Art Project raised £216, and we would like to say a big thank you to Mia for organising this lovely initiative.

Since September, the PTA has donated over £1,800 to teachers to help enhance classroom environments and learning experiences for all pupils. We were also delighted to contribute £200 towards the very successful and popular Twmpath celebration.

Work also continues on the ‘Sensory Support Space’ project. A Pre-Planning Application has now been submitted to Swansea Council and we are currently awaiting their response. Many thanks to our PTA Treasurer, Emma Williams, for all her hard work in helping move this exciting project forward.

‘Walk to School’ days

The school has been running ‘Walk to School’ days for the last nineteen years. They have always been enjoyable and well attended even in wet and cold conditions! As a school, we encourage all children to walk to school as it is better for the environment, saves money and it is healthy.

The ‘Walk to School’ days are a social event when the children, parents and helpers have the opportunity to chat to each other as they walk to school. It is a fun, whole school event that develops your children’s independence, road safety and social skills.

The class with the highest percentage of children walking to school from Underhill will have additional play, supervised by myself.

Please see below the ‘Walk to School’ dates for the rest of the academic year:
