Autumn Term in Dosbarth Limeslade

What’s in our Square Mile?

We started our topic off exploring our school grounds and creating a map using photographs.

We then looked at the Mumbles Lighthouse and found out how a lighthouse works and how they help boats. We all made a lighthouse out of a pringles tube!

We were very lucky to have a visit from the RNLI. James and Adam told us that if we fell in the water, we should make a star shape and we will float, we practiced on the carpet! They brought in a lot of their special equipment and we were allowed to try it on!

How Does the Word Celebrate?

We started off this topic with an immersion day with our class buddies, Dosbarth Three Cliffs. We looked at Bonfire Night and found out why we celebrate it on November 5th.

We counted fireworks and made fireworks with vinegar and baking powder.

We all enjoyed performing in our Christmas show, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’ We were children, Sugar Plum Faries and Elves!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Rotherslade

We have had a very busy first term in Dosbarth Rotherslade. We started with our topic ‘What’s in our square mile?’ and learnt all about the wonderful things around our school. We had a visit from the RNLI lifeboat crew and went on a trip to Oystermouth Library.

For our second topic ‘How does the world celebrate?’ we got together with our class buddies and learnt all about Diwali, the festival of light. We performed puppet shows, created Rangoli patterns, diya lamps and celebrated in our sharing assembly.

We also celebrated Tedi Twt’s 5th birthday and had a big party in the classroom. We wrote party lists, made cards and lots of decorations.

In PE this term we have taken part in gymnastics and dance. We have practised our rolling, jumping and balancing skills. We have had lots of fun dancing linked to different festivals such as Holi, Brazil Carnival, Diwali and fireworks.

We performed our Twas the Night Before Christmas concert with Dosbarth Limeslade and went on a Christmas trip to The Gower Heritage Centre. We were very excited to meet Santa and his elves!

Nadolig Llawen- Merry Christmas!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Langland

We have had a fantastic start to Year 1. We explored our local area. Visiting Oystermouth castle and All Saints Church. We have enjoyed our woodland walks.

We have been enjoying being outside, planting and building.

We have been working hard in our lessons. Getting better at writing and our Maths skills.

We have been very creative.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Caswell

WHAT’S IN OUR SQUARE MILE?

Our “What’s in Our Square Mile” topic was an exciting exploration of our local area. The children learned about the people, places, and features that make our community unique. They have developed map skills, investigated local landmarks, and considered how different places and services support our daily lives. Through discussions, walks, and creative activities, the children deepened their understanding of their environment and developed a real sense of pride in their local area.

CELEBRATIONS

Our Celebrations topic was full of fun,  learning and creativity. The children have explored a variety of celebrations from around the world, including cultural, religious and seasonal events. They have discussed traditions, created crafts, and shared their own experiences, developing their understanding and respect for diversity. Highlights have included making Christingles, designing festive decorations, and writing about special occasions, which has encouraged both curiosity and creativity across the class.

As we come to the end of the Autumn Term, we would like to say how proud we are of the children and everything they have achieved. They have worked incredibly hard, shown kindness to one another and embraced new challenges with confidence. From exciting classroom learning to festive celebrations, it has been a wonderful term of growth and progress.

We would like to wish all our families a happy, restful holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back in the New Year.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Pobbles

It’s been such a busy term and the children have settled really well into new routines and playing in a different playground!

In the first half term, our theme was “What’s in our square mile?” and we enjoyed looking at our locality, it’s history and using maps and Google Earth. We also walked around the village asking people what they liked about Mumbles.

In the second half of the term, our theme has been “How does the World celebrate?”. We have really enjoyed learning about Christmas around the world, and we had a wonderful week with Dosbarth Rotherslade learning all about Diwali.

Every Friday afternoon, we have our own Book Club where we share our favourite books and enjoy answering lots of questions about them.

We’ve also been learning French with Isabelle’s mum!

Happy Christmas from everyone in Dosbarth Pobbles!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Three Cliffs

We have had a really busy term. The children have enjoyed art based on sculptor David Nash, especially creating their own sculptures in the woods. During our topic ‘What’s in Our Square Mile?’ they created a brilliant junk model map of Mumbles. We had a talk from Scientist Ruth Callaway about the Sea Hive and the changing habitat on our local beach, and wrote some excellent recounts of our trip. The children worked on map skills, looking at symbols and examining maps of the local area, and found out how to represent the school yard from a bird’s eye view.

For our topic ‘How Does the World Celebrate?’ the class loved getting together with Dosbarth Limeslade to learn about and respond to the story of Guy Fawkes and bonfire night. They researched different celebrations and created a class database from their research. The children were intrigued to find out about the Welsh tradition of the Mari Lwyd, and began work on instruction writing by producing instructions for making a Mari Lwyd puppet. They have worked hard to present a wonderful carol concert at All Saints Church, and have got Christmassy with card and calendar making.

Nadolig Llawen from Dosbarth Three Cliffs!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Oxwich

First half-term

First half term back, our theme was ‘What is in our square mile?’ and the class did lots of amazing work about the history of Mumbles including the railway, how Mumbles has changed, map work and lots more. The children had an amazing time when Max (a local printer and owner of a clothing brand) came in and did a printing workshop with the class, the class had so much fun!

Second half-term

This half term we were lucky enough to watch ‘The Eye of The Storm’ by Theatre Na Nog. This sparked some great ideas in our EPIC planning, which led to finding out all about weather. Looking at weather symbols, extreme weather and becoming weather reporters. We were also lucky enough to have Technocamps come in for an energy workshop (which was brilliant). But of course, rounding the term up with a fantastic Christmas concert.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Rhossili

Our first topic this year was What’s in Our Square Mile?” During this topic, we explored the history of our local area, learning about the Mumbles Railway and the Samptampa Disaster. We also enjoyed a coastal walk to Fortes Ice Cream Parlour, where we learned about the family history behind the business. In addition, we met a local artist and a marine biologist who spoke to us about the importance of marine life on our beaches and the new sea defences. We worked together as a class to create our own artistic wall panel.

This half term, our topic has been “How does the world celebrate?” We began with an exciting Immersion Week, learning about Día de los Muertos, a Mexican celebration that honours and remembers loved ones who have passed away. Working with Dosbarth Caswell, the children took part in a range of creative activities including making Mexican salsa, learning a traditional dance, creating masks and paper marigolds, and building class ofrendas. It was a fantastic week that sparked creativity and enthusiasm for learning.

We were lucky to watch The Eye of the Storm with Theatre Nanog at the Dylan Thomas Theatre. The play explored important themes such as climate change and young carers, giving pupils lots to think about.

As part of the trip, we also visited Swansea Museum and the National Waterfront Museum, where pupils enjoyed learning more about local history and innovation.

Back in school, we were delighted to welcome Technocamps to work with us. Pupils learned about renewable and non-renewable energy and tested different ways energy can be generated. They then used micro:bits to explore how energy can be created and used through hands-on activities.

It has been a fantastic experience, supporting learning through creativity, technology, and real-world connections.

Tennis

In June, the tennis teams from Pobbles (Sophia, Annabel, Daisy, Nell, Clara, Hetty, Rasya, Chiara) and Three Cliffs (Dylan O, Edward, Elliott, Joe, Dylan R, Theo, Jake, Laith) played in a Tennis Tournament at Bishopston Leisure Centre.

Both teams were lucky enough to be selected to play in the Finals at the LC in September. All sixteen players had a full morning of playing matches showing some really good tennis skills and determination. The players were put into two teams per year group, so we had an Oystermouth A and Oystermouth B girls’ team and an Oystermouth A and Oystermouth B boys’ teams. All four teams were ‘fighting’ to win the Jim Lightbody Trophy.

The winners of each year group were Oystermouth A girl’s team and Oystermouth A boys team.

All players gave 100% effort and were a credit to Oystermouth School.

A huge thank you must also go to the parents who drove the pupils to and from the tournaments.

Mrs Myers

Netball

Although we have not had any netball matches this term, it has been really encouraging to see such strong engagement in our after school netball training sessions on Wednesdays. Pupils from Dosbarth Oxwich and Dosbarth Rhossili have attended in great numbers and have shown excellent enthusiasm, commitment and teamwork each week. I am really pleased with the positive attitude the children bring to training and the way their skills and confidence are developing. It has been a pleasure to see their enjoyment of the game grow over the term.

Mrs Morris

The Monday lunchtime netball sessions for pupils in Dosbarth Pobbles and Dosbarth Three Cliffs have been a real success this term. Attendance has been consistently high, with lots of enthusiasm and energy from the children taking part. It has been lovely to see pupils developing their basic netball skills while working together and supporting one another. I am delighted with the positive atmosphere at these sessions and the keen interest the children have shown in netball.

Mrs Myers

Rugby

This term, although we did not have any matches, the rugby team worked extremely hard and really enjoyed our training sessions every Thursday after school. I have seen great improvements in skill and confidence, and the team has come a long way, with a few children even joining rugby clubs outside of school.

Hopefully, after all this hard work, we will have some games or tournaments soon where the team can show everything they have been working towards.

Mr Greenwood

Football

It has been a fantastic term for football at Oystermouth Primary, with pupils showing real skill, commitment and team spirit in both training and competitive matches. Our Dosbarth Rhossili girls’ team impressed at a friendly tournament at Underhill Park, winning all their matches and playing with confidence, enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship throughout. A boys team from Dosbarth Oxwich and Dosbarth Rhossili also enjoyed a very successful outing at the Urdd football tournament, remaining unbeaten across six matches, winning four and drawing two, while scoring freely and defending strongly.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Tuesday football training sessions and I’m delighted with how the children are playing and progressing.

School Clubs in January 2026

Please note that all school run clubs, both lunchtime and after school, will restart week commencing 12th January.

You can find all the information about our lunch time and after school activities here: https://oystermouthprimaryschool.com/extracurricular-activities/

Thank You to Club Staff

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the members of staff who dedicate their time to running our extra-curricular clubs. Your commitment to providing these opportunities, often outside of your normal working hours, does not go unnoticed and is deeply appreciated. These clubs enrich the lives of our pupils, helping them discover new interests, develop skills, and build lasting memories. Your passion and generosity make a real difference, and I am incredibly grateful for everything you do to support our school community. Thank you!

Mrs Morgan

Former Pupil Crowned European Surfing Champion

We are delighted to share some fantastic news about one of our former pupils, Katarina.

Katarina has recently achieved outstanding success in competitive surfing. She is the current Welsh Under 12 Surfing Champion and, to add to this incredible achievement, she won the Eurokids competition in Tenerife last week. This victory means Katarina is now the Under 12 Female European Surfing Champion.

This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of Katarina and all that she has achieved. We wish her every success as she continues her surfing journey and look forward to following her future achievements.

The Lighthouse

The school is currently in the process of establishing an Enhanced Inclusion Provision called ‘The Lighthouse’. This nurturing space has been thoughtfully designed to provide a calm, supportive environment where children can regulate their emotions, re-engage with learning, and complete tasks quietly.

‘The Lighthouse’ is a proactive approach to supporting pupils who find self-regulation and transitions challenging. It will help to de-escalate behaviour, reduce disruption in classrooms, and enable staff to focus on high-quality teaching and learning for all.

I would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to Anne Blades and her grandson Joseph in Year 5, who have so generously contributed to this project. Anne designed and created a beautiful mural for ‘The Lighthouse’, which has already made the space feel warm, welcoming and special. We are incredibly grateful for their time, creativity and support.

Norton Lodge Day Centre

Children in Dosbarth Three Cliffs have visited Norton Lodge Day Centre again this term.

Spending time with the residents offers numerous benefits for the children. Intergenerational interactions are incredibly valuable and enrich the lives of both the young and elderly involved.

The kindness and empathy the children showed the dementia patients at Norton Lodge Day Centre has made me very proud!

School garden – help needed

We are looking to develop our school garden area by the canteen and we would love to involve the children in this exciting project. If you, or someone you know, is a keen gardener and would be happy to volunteer some time to work with the children, we would be very grateful for your support. The time commitment can be flexible – any help would be very much appreciated. Please get in touch with me directly if you are interested or know someone who might be able to help.

Changes to Breakfast Club Booking

Please beware of an important change to how Breakfast Club is managed. At present, parents add funds via School Gateway, but Breakfast Club sessions do not need to be booked in advance. From January, this will change so that sessions must be both booked and paid for through School Gateway.

This change is being introduced to make the system clearer and easier for families. It will allow you to see exactly when your child attends Breakfast Club and to track your spend, all in one place.

The new Breakfast Club booking system will go live on School Gateway from 6th January 2026.

From this date, all Breakfast Club sessions must be booked and paid for at the same time via the School Gateway app or website.

Bookings can be made up until 8.00am on the day of the session. Bookings can be cancelled right up until the start of the Breakfast Club session, and the system will automatically credit your account.

All existing Breakfast Club credit balances as at 19 December will be transferred automatically to the new system.

If there is any money owing for Breakfast Club up to 19 December, we will send an invoice explaining how to make payment. Please do not add funds to the new Breakfast Club booking system for any current outstanding balances.

If you experience any difficulties, please contact the school office. Thank you for your support in helping Breakfast Club run smoothly.

‘Walk to School’ days

The school has been running ‘Walk to School’ days for the last nineteen years. They have always been enjoyable and well attended even in wet and cold conditions! As a school, we encourage all children to walk to school as it is better for the environment, saves money and it is healthy.

The ‘Walk to School’ days are a social event when the children, parents and helpers have the opportunity to chat to each other as they walk to school. It is a fun, whole school event that develops your children’s independence, road safety and social skills.

The class with the highest percentage of children walking to school from Underhill will have additional play, supervised by myself.

Please see below the ‘Walk to School’ dates for the rest of the academic year.
