It is very hard to believe that the academic year has come to an end. Once again thank you everyone! Thank you to the children and the staff for working so hard, to the PTA for their amazing and relentless efforts to raise money for the school and to the parents, grandparents and Governors for your continued support.
Lots of great things happened during the Summer term, as you can see in this Newsletter. The whole school community should be very proud to hear what our wonderful pupils have achieved this term.
I would like to congratulate all the pupils for their hard work this year. It has been a pleasure and honour to read 232 wonderful reports. I am immensely proud of every child in the school.
I would like to wish the fantastic Year 6 pupils Good Luck in their new schools. You are an amazing and talented group of young people. Being your Headteacher has been an absolute pleasure. You are a credit to the school and I will miss each and every one of you!
Thanks again to all the pupils, staff, parents, grandparents and Governors for the wonderful support you have given me during the last year. I love being the Headteacher of Oystermouth Primary School and I am excited and looking forward to a new term in September.

Our topics this term have been ‘How do we look after Our World?” and “What’s it like beside the seaside?”
We kicked off our first topic with Mrs. Harris taking the children on a recycling walk around the school to see how everyone recycles. The children them wondered how everyone recycles in Mumbles. So we headed off on a walk around Mumbles. We were very lucky because it was bin day and we saw lots of boxes outside all the shops waiting to be picked up and taken to be recycled.
We have enjoyed finding out all about the beach. We went to visit the lifeboat station to find out how to keep ourselves safe on the beach. We watched as they launched the little lifeboat. We then went to the beach and built lots of sandcastle and explored the rock pools. We had a special visit to Ripples where we saw some Raspberry Sorbet being made. We all had a taste of the sorbet and it was delicious!
We loved making pizzas for the birds and mosaic photo frames for our enterprise this year. We had to work hard as a team to finish our product on time! It was hard work!
As part of our ‘What is it like beside the seaside?’ topic we went to Oxwich beach. It was really fun. We met Dawn, who took us crab hunting. We also looked on the shore line for shells and sea glass. Then we made sand sculptures.
As part of Food and Fitness week we tried lots of different fruits. It was lots of fun. We also took part in Sports Day. The children did really well and we were really proud of them.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI we dressed as pirates and the whole school had a ‘Pirate Day’. We loved making pirate hats, talking like a pirate and singing pirate songs.
As the summer term ends, we are excited to share some of the experiences and activities your children have enjoyed over the past few months. It has been a term filled with exploration and creativity. Here’s a recap of the summer term highlights in Dosbarth Langland.
Norton Field Allotments Our visit to Norton Field Allotments was a fantastic experience for the children. They had the opportunity to see various seasonal crops being grown and it was wonderful to watch their curiosity bloom as they asked questions and discovered more about where our food comes from.
Castle Woods Exploring our senses in nature at Castle Woods was a highlight of the term. The children engaged in sensory activities that allowed them to connect with the environment in new and exciting ways. From feeling the textures of leaves to listening to the sounds of the forest. The nature faces that they produced from the items that they collected were a delight!
Nature Pendants with Miss Rosie In preparation for our Summer Fayre, the children worked with Miss Rosie to create beautiful nature pendants. They carefully selected natural materials and crafted unique pieces that were sold at our Enterprise stall. This activity not only fostered creativity but also taught the children valuable lessons in entrepreneurship. Gwaith bendigedig pawb!
Sports Day The children showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm as they participated in various races and events. It was wonderful to see their teamwork and determination in action.
Summer Concert Our summer concert was a wonderful opportunity for the children to showcase their talents. They worked hard to perfect their performances, and it was a joy to see them shine on stage. Thank you to all the parents and families who came to support and celebrate with us.
Weekly Reading Buddies with Dosbarth Pobbles One of the term’s highlights was our weekly reading sessions with Dosbarth Pobbles. The children enjoyed spending time outside, reading with their buddies, and developing their reading skills. These sessions have not only improved their literacy but also strengthened friendships across the classes.
Visits from Penny the Dog and Wendy We were delighted to have Penny the dog and her owner Wendy visit us regularly. The children loved reading to Penny, and her calm presence made these sessions very special. This unique reading experience helped boost the children’s confidence and made reading time even more enjoyable.
It has been an absolute pleasure teaching Dosbarth Caswell. As we come to the end of this incredible school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful journey we’ve shared. From the excitement of the first day to the pride of our Enterprise project, the children have grown, learned, and blossomed in so many ways. It’s been a year filled with curiosity, creativity, and countless memorable moments. I am so proud of each child’s achievements.
Living Things and Their Habitats
We’ve had a fantastic time learning about living things and their habitats, sparking curiosity and a sense of wonder in each child. Our wonderful visits to the beach brought these lessons to life, allowing the children to explore coastal ecosystems first hand. Watching them discover sea creatures and plant life was truly magical, and these experiences have deepened their understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
Enterprise and Sustainability Project
Another highlight of our year was the brilliant Enterprise and Sustainability project. The children planned sustainable products, designed posters and adverts, and used their maths skills to work out costs and profits. They created wonderful products and did a fantastic job selling them on market day. This project not only taught them about sustainability and entrepreneurship but also showcased their creativity and teamwork.
First half-term: The theme for the first half term was, ‘How do we look after our world’. The class loved this topic and took a particular interest in extreme weather. Lots of research was done, creating and presenting PowerPoints in pairs to the class. We focused on discussion writing and debating which extreme weather was the most dangerous, which they loved! Pupil’s loved learning about volcanoes, especially our volcano experiment we did outside. The class showed a great eagerness to learn this half–term, creating fantastic pieces of work.
Second half-term: The final half-term of the year was a busy and exciting one. The class worked extremely hard in enterprise week, creating products and adverts for the summer fayre. The pupils had great fun competing in sports day and worked extremely hard when practicing for the summer concert, which was a great success. This half-term theme was ‘What’s it like to live beside the seaside’, in which the pupil’s wanted to explore sea life around the world, comparing the sea life in Wales to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In numeracy we were exploring shapes, being able to go on shape hunts and using chalk outside for shape games. It has been a lovely end to a great year, I am very sad that it has come to an end.
At the start of term we enjoyed a really special visit from Dobbie the lamb! Thanks to Rowan for introducing him to us.
We were really lucky to be invited to a great event, ‘Cynefin at the Castle’, where we took part in workshops about the Battle of Gower and did a brilliant job demonstrating our Welsh folk dance for all the schools. Miss Draper was very proud!
We have lots of nature lovers in our class, and we really enjoyed the topic ‘How Do We Look After Our World?’ where we focussed on rain forests. We loved making rainforest models and going to the castle woods to compare our local habitat to a rain forest. We raised over £100 for Trees for Change from our cake sale.
We began the second half of the term working hard towards our Enterprise project. The children enjoyed designing and making bee drinking stations because ‘Thirsty Bees Get Wobbly Knees!’
We enjoyed an active Food and Fitness week, with squash, Sports Day and a long jumping challenge!
We have had a very musical term, enjoying more Bandalong sessions, including a fantastic trip to the Brangwyn hall for a Bandalong Bonanza. We also threw ourselves into a brilliant performance of ‘Dr Who’s Hectic Histories!’
We did lots of exciting things on our residential to Brecon. We went rock climbing but our favourite activity was gorge walking it was amazing!
Every week we have Book Buddies. Where we do different tasks with Rotherslade.
During our food and fitness week we had a challenge. How far can we run in five days?
We had the opportunity to perform in The Grand! We were part of primary Partnerships performing with other schools.
Our summer show was ‘Dr Who’s Hectic Histories!’ we travelled through time with the Dr and her sidekick. Our special time was the Victorians, we sang songs and learnt different dances.
We learnt about school life, social classes, street children and what the Victorians did for us!
In May, we had a fantastic time in Llain on our residential. We enjoyed many activities, including kayaking, mud run and high wall climbing. We also had an amazing time building shelters and roasting marshmallows. My funniest moment had to be when the children were guiding their blindfolded partners around an obstacle course in the woods!
We also had a great time with our Spanish friends at Oystermouth Castle and Oxwich. We enjoyed spending time with them and helping them with their English.
The children designed their own games for our Summer Fayre and managed to raise a huge £248 for our class!
In June, we visited Oakwood Theme Park. It was a great opportunity for us to continue to develop our independence and resilience! Some of us tried rides that we thought we would never go on! A great day of screams, laughter and sweets!
The children had so little time to rehearse together for “Doctor Who’s Hectic Histories”. They were absolutely brilliant!
A group of twenty-four pupils ranging from Year 4 to Year 6 took part in the Area 6 Athletics Competition on Wednesday 19th June at the Outdoor Athletic Centre at Ashleigh Road Playing fields. Most of our athletes came either first, second, third or fourth in their events out of nine other athletes in each event. This meant they each scored points for Oystermouth School and were way ahead in points (50 points, the 2nd school had 29!!) at the end of the competition so managed to gain first place overall and won the Area 6 trophy much to the delight of all the athletes.
From the twenty-four pupils who competed in the Area 6 Competition twenty of them were invited to participate in the County Championships on Monday 1st July against lots of schools and individuals within West Glamorgan. All twenty pupils gave 100% in their specific races. Three pupils were lucky enough to gain medals as they came within the first three in their events:
Haydn Vadgama – 1st in the boys high-jump (135cm)
Tommy Daniels – 3rd in the Year 6 sprint
Theo Lewis-Wright – 1st in the ‘B’ 800m race
A huge thank you to the parents who helped with transport to and from these events.

Tennis: Year 3 Boys Area Competition
On Tuesday 11th June five Year 3 boys played in a ‘Red Ball Competition’ at the University Sports Centre. The boys managed to beat the first two schools they played, but unfortunately their third opponents were Oakleigh House School. The Oakleigh House boys proved to be a greater challenge than the first two schools, so unfortunately, our boys lost all of their matches, although a few points were gained throughout the games. The final result was that Oystermouth Boys Team came second overall. This was a really good result for our relevantly inexperienced boys who, throughout the afternoon, really improved on their skill and techniques – ready for next year!!
Congratulations to: Dylan O., Dylan R., Laith, Elliott and Theo who played with great determination and enthusiasm.
Tennis: Year 5 Girls Area Competition
On Friday 14th June, six Year 5 girls played in an ‘Orange Ball Competition’ at the tennis courts in Ashleigh Road. The girls played against Pontarddulais Primary and Pontybrenin Primary. The girls played some excellent tennis which resulted in most of the matches been played were won by Oystermouth. The result of the mornings competition was that Oystermouth came first overall with all girls being awarded gold medallions and a chance to compete in the South Wales Tennis Championships in Whitchurch.
Congratulations to: Katarina, Cialla, Lucy, Greta, Amber and Jessica.
Tennis: Year 6 Boys Area Competition
On Friday 14th June, six Year 6 boys played in a ‘Green Ball Competition’ at the tennis courts in Ashleigh Road. The boys played against three teams from Pennard Primary School. The boys played some excellent tennis which resulted in all Oystermouth boys winning each of their individual matches. The result of the afternoons competition was that Oystermouth came first overall with all boys being awarded gold medallions and a chance to compete in the South Wales Tennis Championships in Whitchurch.
Congratulations to: Ioan, Tommy, Joe, Osian, Jacob and Tomos
Tennis: South Wales Championships
On Tuesday 25th June and Friday 28th June the Year 6 boys tennis team and the Year 5 girls tennis team travelled to Whitchurch to play in the South Wales Championships.
The Year 6 boys team reached the quarter finals, but unfortunately, were knocked out at this stage of the competition. A huge congratulations must go to all the boys for reaching this stage of the competition as they were playing against other boys who are in Welsh tennis squads.
A very big thank you must go to Joseph’s Mum for transporting the boys to and from Whitchurch. It was certainly appreciated, as without her help the boys would not have been able to participate.
The Year 5 girls team reached the finals of these championships and were rewarded second place. Once again, like the boys, they were playing against Welsh Squad players so second place was a fantastic achievement. They were presented with silver medals to add to their collection.
A very big thank you must go to Greta’s Mum for transporting the girls to and from Whitchurch. It was certainly appreciated, as without her help the girls would not have been able to participate.

We’ve had an amazingly successful year with both the mixed team and the girl’s netball team going through to the Urdd National Tournaments in Aberystwyth. Both teams reached the final and showed tremendous skill and good sportsmanship. It was a fantastic weekend, and I couldn’t have been prouder!
We also attended a mini tournament at Bishopston Sports Centre and lots of local teams played. Both teams were unbeaten!

Cricket Tournament 17th June
Mrs Harris took 2 teams of 16 children to play cricket in the area cricket tournament at Dunvant Rugby Club. Team year 5 played 4 games and they played really well as a team. The Year 6 team played 4 games and won them all. Into the final they went they played against a very strong Cryws team but unfortunately they came runners up. As we finished 2nd we were allowed to go to the finals at Ynysygerwn.
Finals Day at Ynysygerwn 26th June
On a very sunny day the year 6 cricket team went to play in the area’s final day. The team played 4 games in the group rounds and then we went into the semi- finals where we ended up drawing, so we had a supper over but unfortunately we lost it. We ended up 3rd overall.
By Mrs Harris
The rugby team enjoyed two competitions this year. Both successful winning lots of games and getting to a semi-final but most importantly the girls and boys had loads of fun.

We are very fortunate to have Mivvi and Penny, two Pets As Therapy dogs, visit school every week.
The Pets As Therapy sessions help raise a pupil’s reading standard, boost their self-confidence, improve concentration levels and have a positive impact on a child’s educational, social and emotional welfare.
Thomas Williams, from Swansea Council Recycling Team, did a whole school Recycling assembly in May.
The children learnt about the importance of recycling with help from Swansea’s ever-popular recycling mascot Sammy the Seagull.
Friday 5th July was a ‘Pirate Day’ to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI. The pupils came to school dressed as pirates, attended a RNLI Assembly and participated in RNLI activities throughout the day.
There were two competitions – the best Pirate Hat and the best Treasure Map. Harri James won the prize for the best Pirate Hat and Felix Dunstan the prize for the best Treasure Map.
Felix and Harri attended a prize giving ceremony at Mumbles Boathouse where they met by the crew.
The school raised a fantastic £200 for the RNLI!
On Friday 12th July, Melanie James, High Sheriff for West Glamorgan came to school.
She talked to the children about her role of High Sheriff and answered questions.
She also spent time with Mrs Chilcott, Mivvi and the children in Rhossili.
Children in Dosbarth Three Cliffs have visited Norton Lodge Day Centre this year.
Spending time with the residents offers numerous benefits for the children.
Intergenerational interactions are incredibly valuable and enrich the lives of both the young and elderly involved.
The kindness and empathy the children showed the dementia patients at Norton Lodge Day Centre has made me very proud!
The school has developed close links with Mumbles Rotary Club. Prior to COVID, Colin Griffiths and his wife Jean volunteered in school listening to children read.
Unfortunately, Colin has passed away. Colin was a very keen photographer. Mumbles Rotary Club hold an annual photography competition at Oystermouth called the ‘Colin Griffiths Photography Award’. The theme for the competition is ‘What’s it like beside the seaside?’ – the same as our current whole school theme. If your child(ren) would like to enter the competition please can they take a photograph and bring it to school with their name and class on the back by Monday 9th September or email it to
oystermouthprimaryschool@oystermouth.swansea.sch.uk. Members of Mumbles Rotary Club will judge the competition. There will be three prizes – a Winners Cup and two runner up prizes.
What an Incredible Year!
Our first year as Co-Chairs of Oystermouth PTA has been amazing! We set ourselves a target to raise £10,000 to replace and improve the outdoor play areas. Thanks to everyone’s help and support, we not only achieved that goal but raised a whopping £16,736.83!
This year we have invested £11,975 in projects to improve learning and play at our school! The most significant of these is £10,000 towards replacing the playground storage sheds and play equipment at both the Mumbles and Gower beaches playgrounds.
We also contributed:
– £200 for Twm Path
– £500 towards the Year 5 and Year 6 Residential Coaches

The school has been running ‘Walk to School’ days for the last nineteen years. They have always been enjoyable and well attended even in wet and cold conditions! As a school, we encourage all children to walk to school as it is better for the environment, saves money and it is healthy.
The ‘Walk to School’ days are a social event when the children, parents and helpers have the opportunity to chat to each other as they walk to school. It is a fun, whole school event that develops your children’s independence, road safety and social skills.
The class with the highest percentage of children walking to school from Underhill will have additional play, supervised by myself.
For security reasons, the gates on Newton Road and Castle Road cannot be left unlocked and unattended. Two staff members will ‘man’ the gates until 8:10am. If your child is attending Breakfast Club, please arrive no later than 8:10am.
We no longer accept cash at Breakfast Club. You can now pay using sQuid Offers. If you need more information, please contact the office.
All bookings for After School Club (ASC) and Gym Club will be through sQuid Bookings. You need to book sessions by 11:00pm the previous day. We would prefer that bookings are made as early as possible to give us enough time to allocate staff.
Please come to the Newton Road gate to collect your child(ren). Please phone this number to speak to a member of the After School Club staff during After School Club hours – 07395115787.
We now have a permanent Foodbank Collection Box by the door in the Art Room.
At the moment the Foodbank especially needs: long life fruit juice or squash, UHT or powdered milk, rice, tinned or powdered potatoes, tinned peas, sweetcorn or carrots, custard rice pudding, toothbrushes child or adult, shower gel and shampoo.
All donations gratefully received.
I would like to remind you of the importance of parking appropriately outside and near school.
Vehicles are not permitted to park on pavements, on double yellow lines, double park or block driveways.
The safety of the children is of paramount importance.
Please do not park or pull in by Roger’s Engineering or by the Bus Stop on Newton Road.
