Autumn Term in Dosbarth Limeslade

This term our topics have been ‘Who am I?’ and ‘How Does the World Celebrate?’

In September we had our first trip of the year to Underhill Park and found lots of leaves, sticks and acorns! We all enjoyed playing in the park as well!

Who am I?
We have been super busy finding out all about ourselves. We talked about our emotions and what makes us happy and sad. In October, Mr. Rice came to visit us and told us all how we look after our teeth and we learnt how to wash our hands. We painted our feet and created a bar chart to see how many of us had the same size feet.

How Does the World Celebrate?

After we celebrated Diwali and Bonfire Night we found out how children celebrate their birthdays around the world. Did you know that in Australia they make Fairy Bread and in Mexico they have a Piñata at their parties?

To help us celebrate Christmas, we all performed in The Twinkly Nativity. We dressed up as sheep, angels, stars and travellers. We also visited the Crib Exhibition at All Saints Church.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Rotherslade

It has been a busy start to the school year for Dosbarth Rotherslade. They have settled in well with the routines of a full school day and as the autumn term ends, we are excited to share some of the experiences and activities your children have enjoyed over the past few months.

Local Visits

Oystermouth Library We were welcomed to Oystermouth library to enjoy our very own story and rhyme time. We enjoyed joining in with the familiar songs and movement before having the opportunity to explore the books and engage in some play and colouring before finishing with a story.

Castle Woods We loved spending time in Castle Woods. The children looked for signs of autumn, explored their senses out in nature and searched for and created their own patterns, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. We look forward to continuing our woodland walks in the New Year.

Judith Roberts Opticians The children had a lot of fun on our trip to the opticians where we learnt all about our eyes and the job of the optician. The children asked some great questions and enjoyed looking at an actual eye through the microscope and trying out 3D glasses.

Shrek the Musical We had a lovely morning in Gorseinon College for the production of Shrek the Musical where the children were taken on an exciting, musical journey. They were charmed by the costumes, lighting and changing set and thoroughly enjoyed the performance!

All Saints Crib Exhibition We had a lovely visit to the beautiful All Saints Church in Mumbles to view the International Crib Exhibition. The exhibits were beautiful, and the wonderful creativity really engaged the children.

Enterprise and Creativity

Tedi Twt turned 5! The children wrote lists of items needed for his party and an invitation to their own favourite teddy to join them in the celebrations. They also baked cakes and played party games. The celebration was a success and Tedi Twt was delighted to have shared his special day with them all.

Performance

Performance Poetry The children collaborated on their very own Bonfire Night Call and Response Poem. They came up with some fantastic ideas and really enjoyed practicing and performing for a special recording to share with their families.

Christmas Concert The Christmas concert; The Twinkly Nativity was a huge success. The children worked hard to perfect their performances, and it was a joy to see their confidence grow with each show. Thank you to all the parents and families for the wonderful costumes and for coming to watch and celebrate with us.

Reading and Companionship

Weekly Reading Buddies with Dosbarth Oxwich One of this term’s highlights has been our weekly reading buddies with Dosbarth Oxwich. The children enjoyed spending time outside, building confidence and forging friendships across the school. In the second half of the term, we spent time playing board games in class and practicing ball skills with our friends. We had a lot of fun!

Visits from Mivvi the dog and Dawn We were delighted to have Mivvi the dog and her owner Dawn visit us regularly at the start of the term. The children enjoyed sitting with Mivvi and petting her while Dawn read stories to them. Mivvi has now hung up her lead and retired but this unique reading experience helped boost the children’s confidence and made reading time even more enjoyable.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Langland

What a wonderful term we have had together in Langland, lots of different experiences and opportunities to learn and enjoy learning.

Literacy, Language and Communication

The two areas we have been looking at this term are Recount and Poetry.

We have also been looking at improving our handwriting and spelling words using our letters and sounds. I have been really impressed with their progress, they have worked hard, and I am really proud of them.

Mathematics and Numeracy

This term we have been looking at basic number skills, counting forwards and backwards. We have also been looking at shapes and their properties. We have used Numbots to support our learning.

Humanities

Our two topics have been ‘Who am I?’ and ‘How does the world celebrate?’ We have learnt about where we are from and how our bodies work. We have looked at different celebrations around the world.

Expressive Arts

We have sang, danced and painted this term. We have learnt songs for our Christmas show ‘ The Twinkly Nativity’. We have learnt how to mix colours and painted portraits.

Outdoor Learning and Woodland Walks

We have continued to go on our woodland walks when the weather allows and we have spent lots of time building and making things in the construction site. We have had lots of fun.

It has been a really great term, and I’m really looking forward to the next one.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Caswell

What a fantastic term we have had in Dosbarth Caswell. The children have settled in very well and have made excellent progress both academically and socially. It has been wonderful getting to know all of the children and learning about their interests.

All the staff would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
We look forward to another fantastic term starting in January.

Who am I?

During our ‘Who am I?’ topic, we enjoyed learning all about our likes and interests, our community and our families. We learned about the basic needs of animals and humans for survival and we also found out about the human body.
We created beautiful self-portraits that brightened up our room.

How Does the World Celebrate?

What a busy term we have had discovering how the world celebrates! We have enjoyed learning about many different religious and cultural celebrations from around the world. We have learned about Diwali and made our own clay Diya lamps. We celebrated Halloween, investigating the inside of a pumpkin and baking Halloween cupcakes. We have learned about the true meaning of Christmas and made our own Christingles, though I’m not sure if any got home without the sweets being eaten! We put on the most fantastic Christmas concert and I am so proud of all the children for having the confidence to deliver their own line, they were amazing!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Pobbles

We started autumn term with our topic ‘Who am I?’ We enjoyed celebrating what makes us unique and choosing a word to describe ourselves. We found out about fingerprints and identified what type of fingerprints we have!

In science we have been learning about the human body and we focused on bones. We loved getting outside and labelling the different bones in our body. We have also been learning about light and why it is important to wear reflective materials at night!

This term we celebrated Shwmae Day. We all wore red, white or green and completed lots of Welsh activities!

As part of our topic How does the world celebrate? We have enjoyed learning about Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Diwali and Christmas around the World! We also shared which celebrations were special to us and our families. We enjoyed our recent visit to All Saints Church to look at the crib exhibition. We are excited to return next week for our carol concert.

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Three Cliffs

We have had a really busy term! Our Lead Creative Schools project has been a big focus, with some really enjoyable days working with Tamar. We all enjoyed working in such a creative way and expanding our Cymraeg, taking trips out into the local area and to Parc Le Breos, linking Welsh language, stories and landscape. The children were proud to present some of their learning to parents in a sharing event.

In our topic ‘Who Am I?’ we enjoyed researching different parts of the body and did a great job making Powerpoints and presenting them to the class.

We have been working really hard to get ready for the Gower Beaches carol service. We have also loved making music in our Bandalong sessions.

Groups of children from Three Cliffs have been visiting Norton Lodge to spend time with the people who attend their day centre Dementia Group. This has been a wonderful experience that we look forward to continuing in the New Year.

Towards the end of term we went on a beach and woods scavenger hunt and collected natural materials to make into Christmas decorations for our D&T project.

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda from all in Three Cliffs!

Autumn Term in Dosbarth Oxwich

First Half Term
The first half term began with an amazing trip to watch a play about a Welsh boxer called Cuthbert Taylor. This trip sparked an incredible excitement and interest to learn for Dosbarth Oxwich. The class researched and created lovely biographies about Cuthbert Taylor, writing and performing commentary for one of his fights. The class really enjoyed this topic and worked very hard and created amazing pieces of work. In addition to this as a class we investigated the human body, including an extremely fun and helpful visit from XLWales.

Second Half Term
How does the world celebrate? The class took an interest in Chinese New Year this half term. We researched all about the traditions and history of Chinese New Year, creating lovely fact files and writing fantastic haiku poems using the our senses and making amazing masks. We of course, had to focus on Christmas, the class extremely enjoyed researching how people celebrate Christmas around the world and all the interesting traditions. Finally, was the Christmas Carol Concert, in which the class did an amazing job and made me a very proud teacher.

AutumnTerm in Dosbarth Rhossili

In September, we went to the Dylan Thomas Theatre to watch Theatr na Nog performing “The Fight”. It was about Cuthbert Taylor, a Welsh boxer who was discriminated against and prevented from competing for the British title due to the colour of his skin. The children were so moved by his story that they wrote a letter to the British Boxing Board of Control asking for an apology for Cuthbert’s family. We also visited the Museums to learn about how people lived during his lifetime.

In school, we used “The Fight” as the basis for most of our “Who am I?” topic work, including art and Digital Competence. Technocamps came into school to teach us how to make a boxing game using Micro:bits too!

Our Spanish friends from The English Centre visited last week and we had a great time learning a flamenco!

We have also enjoyed a Technocamps session, where we learned all about the heart and muscles work, a visit to the Taliesin to watch “Zoetrope” and we have enjoyed a six week course on how to be peer mediators.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
From Dosbarth Rhossili.

Tennis

Pobbles Tennis Club (Wednesday lunch time)

Pobbles have learnt lots of basic tennis skills this term from serving, to using forehand shots and backhand shots.  Next term we will be progressing to learning a volley and smash shots.

Three Cliffs, Oxwich and Rhosilli Club (Thursday lunch time)

All three year groups have now joined together this term to make one club.  This has worked well as Three Cliffs are playing against older pupils and so are learning from the older pupil’s experiences.  We have the problem of using a variety of tennis balls in preparation for the various tennis competitions in the summer term: sponge balls for Three Cliffs, Orange balls for Oxwich and Green Balls for Rhossili.  I’m sure the pupils from Rhossili enjoy playing with sponge ball!!

As always, these clubs are open to anyone who wants to join.

Netball

Pobbles and Three Cliffs Netball Club (Monday lunch time)

Pobbles Netball Club has once again attracted lots of eager boys and girls this term. Pupils from Pobbles are learning lots of skills and rules in order to enjoy playing a game of netball.

The Three Cliffs boys are just as eager and enthusiastic about the game of netball as ever. This term not only have they grown in height but they have also increased their speed, skills and determination to get their hands ‘on the ball’.

Any new players would be welcome to join.

By Mrs Myers

In November, the girls attended the Regional Girls Netball Tournament. Their first game was very tight and ended with a 3-2 loss. However, the girls showed amazing resilience and won the rest of their matches 10-0, 6-0 and 8-0! They won their group and unfortunately lost in the semi-final.

The following week, we attended the Urdd Mixed Netball Tournament. The team played brilliantly and demonstrated fantastic netball skills! We were unlucky to lose by a narrow margin in a really tight game which meant we were unable to progress to the semi-final.

I am so proud of both teams and can’t wait to see them play again in the near future!

By Mrs Morris

Rugby

This term we have enjoyed learning about the rugby basics and the rules of rugby. Pupils have got stuck in and really showed a willingness to learn and get better. We will be hoping to organise some games soon, so they can show what they have learnt!

By Mr Greenwood

Football

In October I took two teams to play football in the Urdd Football Tournament at Ashleigh Road. Both teams played really well. The Year 5/6 girls’ team got to the quarter finals and the Year 4 mixed team got to the semi-finals. I would like to thank Mr Rhys Daniels and Mrs Jo Griffiths for helping with the Year 4 team and Mr Lee Woodman and Ms Mel Whitney for helping me with the girls’ team.

On Friday 13th December I took 17 Year 6’s to play at Pure Football in the Christmas Cup football tournament. Both teams played really well.

Everyone who has played in the football teams this term has made me very proud of being their football coach.

Thank You to Club Staff

Thank you to all the staff who run our extra-curricular clubs. Your time and effort, often given outside your regular hours, are greatly appreciated. These clubs provide valuable opportunities for pupils to explore new interests and develop skills. Your contribution makes a real difference to our school community.

Pets As Therapy

A FOND FAREWELL TO MIVVI
It is with great sadness that Mivvi, our beloved Pets As Therapy visiting dog, will no longer be coming to Oystermouth. Mivvi has decided to retire and will be hanging up her yellow and blue PAT jacket. Since beginning their journey with us in 2016, Mivvi and Dawn have brought much joy and comfort to our school community. Their weekly visits have become a cherished part of our routine and we will all miss the warmth and happiness they brought to the pupils and staff.

We will miss Dawn and Mivvi very much, but we wish them both all the best.

Golden Table

At the request of the Rights Pupil Voice Group, I have reintroduced the ‘Golden Table.’ Each Friday, two children who exemplify ‘The Oystermouth Way’ are invited to sit at the Golden Table. They get to choose a friend to join them, and I have the pleasure of serving as their lunchtime waitress!

100% Recycled Plastic Tables

We are thrilled that Councillors Will Thomas, Angela O’Connor, and Francesca O’Brien, along with the PTA, generously contributed to purchasing 100% recycled plastic tables to replace the wooden ones in the Gower yard.
A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated dads pictured below for giving up their Sunday to assemble the tables. Your support and effort are greatly appreciated!

Norton Lodge Day Centre

Children in Dosbarth Three Cliffs have visited Norton Lodge Day Centre again this term.
Spending time with the residents offers numerous benefits for the children.
Intergenerational interactions are incredibly valuable and enrich the lives of both the young and elderly involved.
The kindness and empathy the children showed the dementia patients at Norton Lodge Day Centre has made me very proud!

Principality Building Society

The school has developed a partnership with the Principality Building Society in Mumbles. Our talented pupils created spooky Halloween drawings and festive Christmas bauble designs to decorate their window display. The winning entries were rewarded with great prizes.

This week, three of our talented prize winners, Flo, Rowan, and Lottie, had the exciting opportunity to visit the Principality Building Society in Mumbles to collect their prizes for the Bauble Design competition. They were joined by Clara and Owen, and together the five children delighted everyone by singing three Christmas songs accompanied by Mrs Dawson on the ukulele.

A big thank you to the Principality Building Society for supporting our school and celebrating our pupils’ creativity!

PTA Update

The money our PTA has raised over the last 2 years has helped improve the school through a number of contributions.

This year we put £10,000 towards playground storage and improvements to the outdoor learning & play equipment at both the Mumbles and Gower beaches playgrounds. We also contributed to books for the Reading Cwtch, the Y5 and Y6 coaches for the annual residential cost to help keep costs down to families along with a number of contributions to our teachers for resources for our children.

Prior PTA projects include the funding of the Gower Beaches Jungle Gym and the MUGA interactive sports court, both which help our children have happy and healthy activities as part of their school day.

None of this would have been possible without a PTA Committee and YOUR support !
Thank you to all!

A number of our PTA committee are stepping down because their children are leaving Oystermouth or they have been on the committee many years.

We are a registered charity that, together with volunteers, runs fundraising events that support our school financially in a time where funding is scarce, and every bit of income is invaluable, and build great friendships along the way!

Chair/co-chair: Sets & leads the direction of the committee, helping to make sure events are a success with everyone’s involvement and all parents & carers views are heard in how best to fundraise for the school.

Secretary: Ensures the smooth functioning of the PTA by handling correspondence, arranging key meetings, and maintaining records & committee governance – good co-ordination skills are needed.

Treasurer(s): Manages monies raised at events, makes approved payments, keeps accurate financial records & reporting financials internally and externally.

Grant Officer: Researches and applies for grants, typically for larger scale projects – writing skills are a must, as this person completes grant applications to large businesses, local authorities and grant-giving trusts.

Communications Officer: In charge of social media, newsletters, emails and keeping the PTA page on the school website up to date. Can support secretary.

We are looking for Mums, Dads and Carers to come onboard to ensure we continue to have a PTA – If we can’t fill the vacancies, we may not have a PTA which would be a huge loss as ours has a reputation as one of the best PTAs in the area!

We also welcome anyone wishing to set up a standing order contribution or help out with skills in any other way!

If you are interested in joining or helping in any other way, please reach out to Mia or Nina or your class rep.

School Uniform Supplier Update

We are pleased to announce that Oystermouth Primary School has partnered with J&S Products as a new uniform supplier, alongside Bergoni. This change, based on feedback, aims to provide greater convenience for families.

While J&S Products will not feature Oystermouth Primary School uniforms on their online shop due to capacity limitations, orders can be placed by calling 01792 206658 and collected from their Tycoch location within a couple of days. For online orders with home delivery, Bergoni will continue to offer this service.

We hope this addition makes accessing uniforms easier. For more information on our school uniform, including PTA pre-loved uniform sales, please visit the school uniform page.

‘Walk to School’ days

The school has been running ‘Walk to School’ days for the last nineteen years. They have always been enjoyable and well attended even in wet and cold conditions! As a school, we encourage all children to walk to school as it is better for the environment, saves money and it is healthy.

The ‘Walk to School’ days are a social event when the children, parents and helpers have the opportunity to chat to each other as they walk to school. It is a fun, whole school event that develops your children’s independence, road safety and social skills.

The class with the highest percentage of children walking to school from Underhill will have additional play, supervised by myself.
