Summer Term 2025 Newsletter

Where has the year gone?!

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another school year – this year has flown by!

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to every member of our incredible Oystermouth community.

To our wonderful children and dedicated staff – thank you for all your hard work, enthusiasm and determination throughout the year. To our fantastic PTA – your energy, commitment and creativity in raising funds for the school never cease to amaze me. And to our parents, grandparents and Governors – your continued support means so much.

This newsletter is full of highlights from a busy and exciting Summer term and I hope you enjoy looking back on everything we’ve achieved together. Our pupils have done themselves proud and I know you’ll agree that they continue to shine in so many ways.

I want to say big congratulations to all our pupils for their effort and achievements this year. It’s been such a privilege to read their end-of-year reports – each one filled me with pride. Every single child in our school brings something special and I’m so proud of them all.

A special goodbye and good luck to our amazing Year 6 pupils. It’s been a joy to be your Headteacher and I will miss each one of you. You’re ready for the next chapter and I know you’ll go on to do great things.

Finally, thank you all again! Your support, kindness and commitment to the school means the world to me. I absolutely love being Headteacher of Oystermouth Primary and can’t wait to see what the next school year brings.

Summer Term in Dosbarth Limeslade

What will I be?

We all enjoyed this topic and thought carefully about what type of job we would like to have when we are older.

We visited the school careers fayre and spoke to lots of people about their jobs.

Why is nature so special?

To find out why nature is so special we visited Plantasia and the Upper Norton allotments.

We watched five caterpillars turn into butterflies

We have been very busy this term. We have been keeping fit in the gym, exploring in our outside area and we had an end of term trip to Joe’s ice cream parlour!

Summer Term in Dosbarth Rotherslade

Butterflies

We have followed and learnt about the life cycle of the butterfly. We enjoyed learning about the different stages and how special butterflies are.

Enterprise Work

Using a nature theme, the children designed and painted their own pots, planted sunflower seeds and prepared packets of wildflower seeds to sell at their Sunflower Beautiful stall at the Summer Fayre. They did a fantastic job and raised lots of money for their class!

Plantasia Visit

We had a super visit to Plantasia with Dosbarth Limeslade. After exploring the areas on site we met a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates up close! The children (and the grown ups!) were curious and brave and we had a lot of fun!

Summer Term in Dosbarth Langland

We have been learning all about sea turtles. We found out how big ‘Turt Reynolds’ was and made a life size copy.

We have been using water colours and pastel to recreate the special colours of turtle shells.

For our enterprise activity we painted special stones and turned them into turtle pictures.

We visited Langland to start our topic. We made a huge turtle sculpture from stones.

For our summer concert we sang a song about all the different animals there are in the world. We made fantastic masks.

Tamar came to see us and told us an amazing story about ‘The magic stone’, she told the story in Welsh and we learnt lots of new words.

Summer Term in Dosbarth Caswell

As we come to the end of a wonderful year in Dosbarth caswell, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible progress and achievements each of you has made. It has been a joy to watch you grow in confidence, develop new skills, and support one another. From tackling tricky maths problems to becoming brilliant writers and enthusiastic readers, you should all be so proud of how far you’ve come. You’ve shown resilience, creativity, and a fantastic attitude to learning every single day!

Enterprise

One of the highlights of our year was the exciting Enterprise project. You all showed incredible creativity and teamwork as you planned, designed, and made your own fantastic products. From coming up with ideas and logos to carefully crafting your items and practising how to speak to customers, you worked so hard every step of the way. Market Day was a huge success, and it was wonderful to see your pride as you sold your creations to families and friends. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and budding business skills truly shone!

Food and Fitness Week

Food and Fitness Week was full of energy, excitement, and learning! You all threw yourselves into the fun activities with such enthusiasm -from lively salsa dancing and dynamic squash sessions to trying out jujitsu moves with confidence and focus. As well as keeping active, we also learned about the importance of healthy eating, explored the different food groups, and thought about how to make good choices to keep our bodies strong and healthy. It was a brilliant week that showed just how much fun looking after ourselves can be .

Why is Nature so Special?

This term, we’ve been exploring the question: Why is nature so special? Together, we discovered just how amazing the natural world is by learning about food chains, predators and prey, and how every creature plays an important role in its habitat. A real highlight was our bug hunt at the allotments, where you showed great curiosity and care while searching for mini-beasts in their natural environment. It was fantastic to see you using your science skills to observe, ask questions, and make connections between what we’ve learned and what we could see all around us!

Summer Term in Dosbarth Pobbles

Our topic this half term was “Why is nature so special?” To launch our learning, we enjoyed a fantastic day out at Langland Bay. The children had a wonderful time exploring the rock pools, building imaginative sand sculptures, and simply enjoying the great outdoors with their friends. It was a fun and inspiring start to our topic, sparking lots of curiosity and excitement about the natural world.

The children also took part in our Enterprise Project. They were challenged to develop a business idea from scratch, including choosing a name and designing a logo. Their business, The Nature Heroes, was a celebration of nature and sustainability. At the summer fayre, the children showcased their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit by selling a range of handmade products, including wildflower seed bombs, watercolour prints, greeting cards, and garden decorations. Every item was made with care and purpose, and the project was a great success!

This term, we have been fortunate to take part in The Lead Creative Schools Project. As part of this exciting opportunity, we worked closely with two talented creative professionals: Bill, a visual artist, and Tamar, a Welsh storyteller. Our main goal was to develop and strengthen our use of the Welsh language—and we were able to achieve this through a range of creative activities, including music, drama, and art. It’s been a fun and inspiring journey that helped us bring the language to life in imaginative and meaningful ways.

As part of our creative project, the children worked incredibly hard alongside artist Bill to design and create a stunning outdoor mural for our school. This vibrant piece of artwork is a lasting reminder of their creativity and collaboration. The mural beautifully reflects our local area and includes key Welsh vocabulary that the children can use and refer to every day. The pupils are extremely proud of their hard work—and rightly so. The finished mural is a wonderful addition to our school environment and something the whole community can enjoy.

Summer Term in Dosbarth Three Cliffs

It’s been a VERY busy end to the year!

We started off planning, making and eventually selling our enterprise products for the stall, Nature Heroes, where we enjoyed collaborating with Dosbarth Pobbles, and a trip to the woods to collect natural resources. In topic work we had a great workshop about money around the world and in different cultures, and thought about different job sectors and jobs of the future.

In our ‘Why is Nature So Special?’ topic we began with a lovely day at Langland, made some sand sculptures and did a lot of rockpooling. During the topic we have learnt about rainforest plants, animals and different layers, as well as comparing our lives to those of rainforest communities. The children have enjoyed researching animals that are of interest to them, and incorporating this into their information writing.

Food and fitness week was really popular – the class loved all the extra activities: Salsa, cricket, squash, tennis, marshal arts and physical literacy, and showed fantastic skill and participation.

Other special events have included ‘Cynefin at the Castle’, Sports Day, a Bandalong concert in the Brangwyn hall and of course our fantastic end of year Gower Beaches concert.

The staff are proud of what the children have achieved this year, and we wish them all the best for Dosbarth Oxwich.

Summer Term in Dosbarth Oxwich

First half-term

This term, pupils were busy preparing for the Summer Fair—making dog and cat treats, crafting flannel animals, researching prices, and creating adverts. They enjoyed developing practical skills like teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, all while showing fantastic enthusiasm and dedication. It was a great start to a successful event!

Second half-term

This half-term included a fantastic residential trip, where pupils-built confidence and made lasting memories. They explored environmental issues in a fun deforestation workshop and loved investigating solutions. The term ended on a high with a brilliant concert performance, showcasing their hard work, creativity, and growing confidence on stage

Summer Term in Dosbarth Rhossili

It’s hard to believe we are at the end of the year already!
The children have had an extremely busy term, including a fantastic residential in Llain, where they had the opportunity to (among other things!) light their own fires, kayak on a lake, climb on a climbing wall and learn how to hit a target in archery! And just last week, we had a brilliant day in Heatherton.

For our Immersion Day, we went to Langland Beach and spent most of the day designing the most amazing sand sculptures!

The children worked really hard preparing for our Summer Fayre and raised a huge amount of money for the school. Da iawn! I’m sure you’ll agree that they are an incredibly talented group! Their singing and energy during the concert were outstanding, and they truly proved themselves to be champions!

Good luck Dosbarth Rhossili in your new schools! We’ll miss you!

Tennis Competition

Eight very enthusiastic girls from Dosbarth Rhossili & Dosbarth Oxwich competed in the Area Tennis Competition at Ashleigh Tennis Courts on Wednesday 25th June.

The girls played some excellent tennis, winning most of their singles matches and doubles matches. With so many matches being won, Oystermouth Team A came first and Oystermouth Team B came second.

Congratulations to: Katarina, Cialla, Lucy, Greta, Sophie, Angharad, Jessica and Ava H. for their success and continued commitment to our Tennis Club.

I will miss those of you who are moving on to comprehensive school next year.

Area Athletics Report

Twenty four pupils took part in the Area Sports Competition on Tuesday 17th June at Ashleigh Road athletic track. The pupils taking part ranged from Three Cliffs to Rhossili. The weather was on our side, so none of the pupils got wet.

The events the pupils took part in were: Sprint (Annabelle, Rhys, Theo, Willow, Freddie and Katarina), Relay (Year 5: Willow, Cleo, Ava H, Ava F, Theo, Ralph, Owen, Macsen and Year 6: Freddie, Osian, Arthur D, Daniel, Katarina, Ruby, Amber and Greta), 800m (Osian and Ruby), Shot (Katarina and Morgan), Long Jump (Ava and Freddie) and High Jump (Ruby and Osian).

The majority of Oystermouth pupils came in the first three positions gaining lots of points towards the school total. The final result was second place – only losing to the first placed school (Cwmrhydyceirw) by 3 points. All pupils were a credit to the school giving 100% effort and all wearing P.E. kit.

Well done to everyone who took part and a special thank you to Macsen, Amber and Ava H. for stepping in at the last minute to replace injured pupils.

A big thank-you must also go to the parents, grandparents who transported pupils to and from the venue.

Thank You to Club Staff

Thank you to all the staff who run our extra-curricular clubs. Your time and effort, often given outside your regular hours, are greatly appreciated. These clubs provide valuable opportunities for pupils to explore new interests and develop skills. Your contribution makes a real difference to our school community.

Our Apprentice Caretakers

A huge thank you to Freddie, Joel and Ty in Dosbarth Caswell. At every school event, they take it upon themselves to make sure all the rubbish is collected and recycled. Their efforts help keep our school clean, safe and environmentally friendly – da iawn boys!

Norton Lodge Day Centre

Children in Dosbarth Three Cliffs have visited Norton Lodge Day Centre this year. Spending time with the residents offers numerous benefits for the children. Intergenerational interactions are incredibly valuable and enrich the lives of both the young and elderly involved.

The kindness and empathy the children showed the dementia patients at Norton Lodge Day Centre has made me very proud!

Colin Griffiths Photography Award

The school has developed close links with Mumbles Rotary Club. Prior to COVID, Colin Griffiths and his wife Jean volunteered in school listening to children read.

Unfortunately, Colin passed away. Colin was a very keen photographer. Mumbles Rotary Club hold an annual photography competition at Oystermouth called the ‘Colin Griffiths Photography Award’. The theme for the competition is ‘Why is nature so special?’ – the same as our current whole school theme. If your child(ren) would like to enter the competition please can they take a photograph and bring it to school with their name and class on the back by Monday 15th September or email it to oystermouthprimaryschool@oystermouth.swansea.sch.uk.

Members of Mumbles Rotary Club will judge the competition.

There will be three prizes – a Winners Cup and two runner up prizes.

2024 Overall winner Annabel Costello, Dosbarth Pobbles

‘Walk to School’ days

The school has been running ‘Walk to School’ days for the last nineteen years. They have always been enjoyable and well attended even in wet and cold conditions! As a school, we encourage all children to walk to school as it is better for the environment, saves money and it is healthy.

The ‘Walk to School’ days are a social event when the children, parents and helpers have the opportunity to chat to each other as they walk to school. It is a fun, whole school event that develops your children’s independence, road safety and social skills.

The class with the highest percentage of children walking to school from Underhill will have additional play, supervised by myself.

Keep an eye out for Autumn Term Walk to School dates.
