Pupils in Dosbarth Three Cliffs recently took part in Living Libraries: Rural Roots and Community Conversations – an inspiring new community learning project connecting older adults with local primary pupils through storytelling and conversation.
During the session, volunteers became “Living Books,” sharing first-hand memories of what life was like growing up in Swansea. Pupils listened with fascination as they heard about how people travelled, learned, played, and worked in years gone by, gaining a deeper understanding of how their community has changed over time.
The project, supported through the Swansea Rural Anchor Grant Scheme, brought history and local heritage to life while encouraging empathy, curiosity, and a strong sense of cynefin – belonging and identity. It also linked well with the Curriculum for Wales, supporting learning across Humanities and Health & Wellbeing.
Headteacher Mrs Morgan said:
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to connect with members of the community and learn through real stories from the past. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who generously gave their time and shared their memories – you’ve truly helped our children see Swansea through new eyes.”
Dosbarth Three Cliffs are now using what they learned to create follow-up projects celebrating local voices and the history of their community.
